Just a short distance from the city centre, close to green spaces, comfortable homes – the new “Fegetz Süd” residential area at the Sphinxmatte site on the edge of Solothurn’s old town has a wide range of benefits to offer its residents.
Attractive living in central area of Solothurn, Switzerland
Four modern blocks with 46 individual 2.5 to 5.5 room flats were
built here in early 2016. The communal external areas are in perfect keeping with the buildings’ design, with generous cycle paths and footpaths, a play area for children and plenty of green space creating a healthy, happy atmosphere.
In the evenings and at night, CITY ELEMENTS 180 illuminating columns and bollards with integrated control systems by Hess provide even, perfectly tailored lighting throughout the area.

Holistic lighting concept
Consistent design with CITY ELEMENTS illuminating columns and bollards
When planning the new residential area, the designers wanted to find a timeless and energy-efficient lighting solution that would blend discreetly into their architectural design concept. They found it in illuminating columns and illuminating bollards from Hess’ CITY ELEMENTS series. “The lights blend in perfectly with the environment", say the planners of Solothurn planning agency baderpartner ag planen bauen nutzen.
The lights’ unobtrusive expression of design allows them to blend seamlessly into the urban environment, and they feature state-of-the-art technology in their powerful LEVO LED modules and integrated control systems.
The entrance to the buildings are each illuminated by a 3.5 metre high CITY ELEMENTS 180 column with asymmetric light distribution. And the specially manufactured illuminating bollards with translucent polycarbonate enclosures have been installed all along the area’s winding footpaths. These distribute the light into a wide, asymmetric S-shape pattern to provide residents good orientation at night.
Night-time dimming for maximum efficiency
Integrated dimming systems ensure that the CITY ELEMENTS illuminating columns are incredibly energy-efficient to run. Their integrated time switch automatically reduces the illumination level during night-time hours. “We are currently testing the adequate level of illumination”, say the planners.
The illuminating bollards are connected to a DALI dimming system, and the team is working to determine the illumination level according to the residents’ needs.
Residents feel completely comfortable
The residents’ feedback on the lighting systems has been consistently positive. “They like the way the lighting helps to guide them along the footpaths, and find the area a very pleasant place to live in general”, report the planners.
CITY ELEMENTS – Multifunctionality at its best
More than just a luminaire
CICITY ELEMENTS from Hess is a luminaire system that is suitable for all requirements in the city as well as in front of prestigious and high-profile buildings. These modular illuminating columns are suitable for almost all lighting tasks and fit perfectly with the existing urban surroundings as well a wide array of architectural requirements thanks to their individually combinable base, intermediate and terminating elements, two different diameters, various lighting technologies and variable heights of up to 9 meters and above.
Furthermore, with CITY ELEMENTS a variety of additional functions and supply solutions for various inner-city and functional requirements can be implemented, such as for electricity and water supply, Christmas illuminations, camera installation in security areas, emergency call functions and attractive light projections, or in regard to e-mobility.
